Trump thanks NK's Kim for releasing 3 Americans

US President Donald Trump will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore on 12 June, he has said.

MARTIN: What concessions do you think the Trump administration is willing to make at this moment?

President Donald Trump has arrived at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington to greet three Korean-Americans as they return to the mainland US after more than a year imprisoned in North Korea.

Vice president Mike Pence also welcomed the former prisoners, while secretary of state Mike Pompeo smiled broadly as the trio took their first steps back on home soil.

Trump is embarking on the meeting with Kim after announcing on Tuesday the United States was pulling out of a 2015 accord imposing global oversight of Iran's nuclear program.

White House officials, without providing specifics, said on Thursday the meeting could be scuttled if North Korea did anything unacceptable over the next month.

Trump entered office as an emboldened North Korea developed new generations of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles capable of hitting the continental US.

Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer was not impressed with President Trump's 3 a.m. news conference welcoming home three American detainees released by North Korea on Wednesday, after years of imprisonment by that dictatorship. I mean, the pat answer is - well, it's energy assistance, it's economic assistance, but it sounds as though President Trump is moving more in the direction of bigger things, bigger carrots, if you will, including normalization of political relations, a peace treaty, and there even been reports in the newspaper last week that he's considering removing ground troops - US ground troops from the Korean Peninsula. They were taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to be evaluated and treated as necessary before being reunited with their families. "This is a good choice", said Mintaro Oba, a former state department official who worked on Korean negotiations.

At a summit last month, Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in vowed to work to rid the peninsula of nuclear weapons, although the means of achieving this were not detailed.

Trump has struck a cautiously optimistic tone in discussing the prospects of reaching a deal during his upcoming summit with Kim, saying he is hopeful a historic agreement can be brokered while also warning the talks could prove unfruitful.

The three men released this week were the last Americans being held in North Korea. "God Bless America, the greatest nation in the world".

Singapore was favoured by USA officials because of its neutrality and infrastructure. The Republican president, Schumer said, should insist upon strong, verifiable commitments from North Korea on disarmament.

The meeting will be the first between a sitting U.S. President and a leader of the DPRK.

Earlier in the week, the US President had ruled out meeting Mr Kim at the demilitarised zone which separates North and South Korea.

The difference between the two sets of photos suggest the new tenor of relations between the United States and North Korea.

The last American to be freed - Otto Warmbier, who was jailed for stealing a hotel sign - was released previous year but was fatally ill, and died shortly after returning home.

"We are happy for the hostages and their families", the Warmbiers said in a statement.
