He stressed however that the possibility of an worldwide spread of the disease was still considered "low", but said the situation was constantly being evaluated.

"Since notification of the cases on 3 May, no deaths have been reported either among the hospitalised cases or the healthcare personnel", the statement said. "Due to its huge swathes of forest, the DRC is a reservoir for the virus, making the country particularly susceptible to outbreaks of Ebola", he says.

This Ebola outbreak is the DRC's 9th known outbreak since 1976, reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Officials from the World Health Organization and other global health agencies are in the area to help contain the outbreak's spread.

The centre also helped contingents from Nigeria deal with the outbreak in the three most affected countries-Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. Another 32 cases of patients with Ebola-like symptoms have been reported, including three health workers.

An Ebola pandemic quickly decimated West Africa between 2014 and 2016.

Just seven people died of Ebola in Nigeria in 2014 out of 19 confirmed cases, whereas the disease killed over 11,000 elsewhere in west Africa, and the country was commended for its response to the disease.

Ebola is believed to be spread over long distances by bats, which can host the virus without dying, as it infects other animals it shares trees with such as monkeys. On Thursday, Congo announced another Ebola-linked death - the first since the rescissions request - and said that nine new cases had emerged.

Of the suspected cases, at least 18 people are thought to have died from the disease, whose initial symptoms include a fever, sore throat and muscular pain. World Health Organization said in 2015 that preliminary results showed 100 percent efficacy for the VSV-EBOV Ebola vaccine developed by Merck & Co. and NewLink Genetics.

The DRC Red Cross has responded to all past Ebola outbreaks in the country and has a strong, in-country network of experts.

The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service said they received an alert from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Congo's health ministry on Tuesday, May 8, described the fresh outbreak as a "public health emergency with worldwide impact".

People most at risk of Ebola infection are those that care for infected people, the NHS said. Despite it occurring outside an urban area, this particular outbreak may be harder to contain because it has already spread across 56 kilometres.

An outbreak of Ebola, a deadly form of viral hemorrhagic fever, has stricken Congo for the ninth time since the disease was discovered in the 1970s.
