Hawaii's Kilauea volcano could soon send boulders and ash shooting out of its summit crater in the kind of explosive eruption last displayed almost a century ago.

President Trump approved Hawaii Gov. David Igle's request for disaster relief aid less than 24 hours after the state asked for the declaration.

The threat has caused officials to close Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, and could soon ground planes at one of the island's two major airports. There are now three active volcanoes in Hawaii. The volcanic vents have oozed relatively cool, sluggish magma left over, according to scientists, from a similar event in 1955.

Diagram explains explosive eruptions of volcanoes. As a result, lava levels inside the volcano's main crater have been decreasing.

Geologists expect new lava outbreaks in or around the hard-hit Leilani Estates area in the southeastern Puna district, about 20 miles (32 km) south of Hilo, where 27 homes have been destroyed and all 1,900 residents have been evacuated. "We've had all the warning from Pele that anybody needs to make plans to take care of themselves". "We know it is a distinct possibility".

Kilauea, however, is a shield volcano, where basaltic lava flows nearly continuously out of a summit crater and other vents, building a flat dome.

Steam and gas rise in Leilani Estates in the aftermath of the Kilauea volcano eruption on Hawaii's Big Island, May 10, 2018, in Pahoa, Hawaii. That magma would be hotter and more fluid, making eruptions last longer with faster-moving lava.

Experts warn that within the next few weeks the level of the lava lake could drop further to reach water level. "This is three football fields going down", Mandeville said.

At the current rate of change, that is about six or seven days away.

The Hawaii National Guard is preparing for a worst-case scenario when It comes to the ongoing volcanic activity: A mass evacuation of as many as 2,000 people who live on Kilauea's east rift zone. The last time that happened was in 1924, it blasting rock and ash more than five miles into the air.

People should also be cautious around the water: once lava interacts with saltwater, it produces hydrochloric acid, which is toxic.

What followed was a flurry of earthquakes as huge volumes of magma - the term for lava beneath the surface - drained back through deep-underground passages that carried the molten rock far downslope.
