NHL: "Washington" has opened the account in a series with "Tampa"

The building erupted in cheers.

The Caps blitz the Lightning with a pair of first period goals and two more in the second period on their way to a 4-2 victory at Amalie Arena in Tampa. Washington capitalized on two of their four power-plays. Where Kempny really dominated, however, was especially impressive in the offensive zone. "Capitals" to 27 minutes, scored four unanswered goals and kept the extracted advantage. Defensively, the Tampa Bay Lighting are allowing 2.9 goals per game and are killing 76.1 percent of their opponents power plays.

The Capitals were able to win despite not having Backstrom in the lineup. They were down 2-0, and they had an intermission to think about what could have been.

Down 4-0, Stamkos tried to get a Lightning comeback started in the third with a power-play goal. The Caps had their chance at the Stanley Cup, the theory went, but with significant offseason departures and stars like Alex Ovechkin turning another year older, the 2017-18 season could have ended in a whimper. We just didn't treat it that way.

There were questions concerning which Capitals team the Lightning would face: one suffering an emotional letdown after finally beating the Penguins to the conference final or one who would use the energy from slaying that playoff dragon to continue its quest for the first Stanley Cup in franchise history. It was too late. "We know that it's a play that they do".

Even the Capitals had doubted their ability to do much of anything with 7.1 seconds left. "Hit a guy that is open right in front of you, make the simple play, get pucks deep and use our speed on the forecheck to create some havoc", McDonagh says. And yet, it was more than enough time.

"For whatever reason they were quicker to the pucks, better disciplined and better on special teams and that is a good recipe for success", Canadian forward Stamkos said. "The crowd was kind of stunned a little bit".

In the second period, "Tampa" continued "yawn" attack "Washington".

Beagle and Eller scored in the first seven minutes of the second period for a 4-0 lead. The Capitals took game one by a score of 4-2. The Bolts will have to repeat the script from their second-round series against the Boston Bruins, in which they lost Game 1, to draw even against the Capitals, or else this could be a surprisingly short series. Friday night, you couldn't tell which team was which. Everything is going the Capitals' way so far.

It was big. It was stunning. Backstrom is considered doubtful after he sat out Monday's Game 6 in the second round and hasn't practiced since.

"That was a window for us", Trotz said. The Lightning had two shots on goal, with only one in the first 15 minutes.
