"We're disheartened by the additional reported illnesses in recent days and we apologize to anyone who may have been sickened or who has a family member or friend who may have taken ill because of any of our eggs", Gene Grabowski, a representative for Rose Acre Farms, told The Daily Meal.

Rose Acre Farms announced the voluntary recall of 206,749,248 eggs that were sold under several brands and distributed to retail stories and restaurants. Other affected brand names include Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Food Lion, Glenview, Great Value, Nelms, Publix, Sunshine Farms, and Sunups.

The CDC said the outbreak impacted 11 states, including 8 in NY, 5 in North Carolina, 8 in Virginia, 6 in Pennsylvania, 3 in SC and 1 case in Colorado, West Virginia, and New Jersey. In 1990, the egg producer was linked to three separate salmonella outbreaks that sickened hundreds of people, the paper reported. These eggs were sold under multiple brand names at numerous retailers, both in the US and overseas.

According to the Post, Rose Acre Farms has come under scrutiny in the past for salmonella contamination.

"Which eggs have Salmonella and which ones don't?" said Food Safety Guy Lars Johnson.

More than 500 million eggs from two Iowa farms owned and controlled by Austin J. DeCoster were recalled that year.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, salmonella causes about 1.2 million illnesses, 23,000 hospitalizations and 450 deaths every year in the United States.

Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella Braenderup can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

Of the 25 people for whom complete information is available, 88 percent, or 22 people, reported eating shell eggs before becoming sick. International Harvest Inc., based in Mount Vernon, New York, recalled bags and bulk packages of Organic Go Smile!

For a full list of recalled brands, consumers are urged to check the Food and Drug Administration's website. The outbreak resulted in 265 illnesses in eight states.
