Mahathir-led Opposition win ends Malaysia party's 60-year hold on power

The pardons board in Malaysia's capital will meet this week to discuss Anwar's release and Mahathir said he would be released the same day.

In 2008, once his ban on political participation was lifted, he was hit with further sodomy charges.

The royal pardon is crucial for the PKR leader who plans to return to politics after his release. Smiling and looking spry in a tailored black suit, Anwar emerged from a Kuala Lumpur hospital where he had undergone surgery for a shoulder problem, giving a thumbs-up to a crowd of journalists before leaving in a convoy of cars without making any public comment.

He was greeted at the palace by new Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, his ally-turned-foe-turned-ally, with whom he joined forces to oust scandal-tainted Najib Razak's administration in last week's election.

"I expect him to play the same role as the leaders of the other three parties".

"My answer is simply that we must all firmly resolve to never let our nation sink to the depths it did again and prime minister Mohamad now has a rare second chance to put things right". He added that he would make the final decision about cabinet posts.

Anwar sought to allay those concerns, saying he was not in a hurry to take over from Mahathir.

She says that Anwar's recent hospitalization might "encourage him to slow down a bit", but he is known to be eager to get back into the fray. Two photos provided with the report and reviewed by Reuters showed a van with the department's logo and a shopping trolley filled with orange boxes.

"I always believed in the wisdom of the people and that if we fought hard enough we would eventually prevail", he told Fairfax Media.

Yet rather than give up, Anwar worked from his prison cell to forge a new opposition alliance by ending the two-decade feud with Mahathir - a gamble that paid off when the alliance won the May 9 polls and ended the National Front's 60-year grip on power. He was Mahathir's deputy in the 1990s but fell out with his mentor during the Asian financial crisis. Once a high flyer in the ruling party, Anwar was convicted of homosexual sodomy and corruption after a power struggle with Mahathir in 1998. Both times, he and his supporters have said the charges were politically motivated.

Mahathir, who built much of his campaign by accusing Najib of corruption, vowed to control corruption and cronyism after the election.

Asked if Najib would go to prison, he said: "It all depends on the investigation being made and whether there is a case against him or not".

The scandal is being investigated in at least six countries, including Singapore, Switzerland and the United States.

"Now there is a new dawn for Malaysia". He has warned that Najib will have to "face the consequences" if found guilty of wrongdoing.
