Turkey has been one of the most vocal critics of Israel's response to the Gaza protests and of the US Embassy move, recalling its ambassadors from Tel Aviv and Washington and calling for an emergency meeting of Islamic nations on Friday.

Reacting on Twitter, Netanyahu said: "Erdogan is among Hamas's biggest supporters and there is no doubt that he well understands terrorism and slaughter".

But the Israeli ambassador to the UK, Mark Regev, this morning defended the use of force as "measured" and "surgical". "I suggest that he not preach morality to us". The meeting was being held in response to Monday's violence in Gaza.

Nikki Haley denied that Monday's deaths had anything to do with the USA decision to open its embassy in Jerusalem.

The Gaza protests were part of "The Great March of Return" ― weeks of demonstrations running from late March until the annual Nakba Day on May 15, which commemorates the displacement of Palestinians when the state of Israel was created in 1948.

Monday was the deadliest day in Gaza since the 2014 war with Israel.

The protest kicked off with a rally near Grant Park, on Michigan Avenue near Congress, with participants chanting "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!" and "Hey Netanyahu, what do you say?"

The military has said presumably less lethal rubber-coated steel pellets are not effective in keeping demonstrators from the fence.

"I'm really angry that my taxes are being used to fund this terrible oppression of Palestinians by Israel", said Carole Seligman, who was protesting against Israel.

Israel has said it is acting in self-defence to defend its borders and communities.

Nauert also refused to link the violence with the new American embassy, unveiled Monday after the United States recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital in December.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian described the situation as "explosive" and criticised the United States for unilateral acts in the region and Israel for what he said was an unjustified level of violence.

Following Monday's border clashes Turkey pulled its ambassadors to Israel and the USA and expelled the Israeli ambassador in Ankara.

"They are not committing this genocide for the first time", he said, adding that the killings "have shown the ugly face of Israel".

Though on opposite sides of the street, police provided protective barriers for both sides.

He also urged Hamas not to use protests as cover to plant bombs and "create provocations".

US Ambassador Nikki Haley defended Israel, however.

Kuwait said it would propose a draft U.N. Security Council resolution on "protection of Palestinian civilians" following violence in Gaza and the United States on Tuesday praised what it called Israel's restraint against militant group Hamas.
