Memory of fallen officers honored in west Kentucky

As society and law enforcement's role in it has been continually in flux since then, around 1982 it became an event honoring the fallen, as well as those who served and those still in active duty.

Much of the week is devoted to the memories of officers who have died in the line of duty.

The families of three of the four fallen were joined by members of the Fond du Lac County community to honor the sacrifice of their father, son, and brother.

Representatives from the Rome City and Floyd County police departments as well as the Floyd County Sheriff's Office were at the board's Monday meeting to accept a joint city-county, proclamation naming this Law Enforcement Memorial Week.

After the 2014 shooting death of Micheal Brown in Ferguson, Mo., police officers in that city and across the country got a really bad name, although the officer responsible for the shooting was never indicted.

Since 1968, 54 officers from the Savannah area have lost their lives while on the job. That occurred in our city last weekend at the Bowling Green Fraternal Order of Police Lodge.

"We want the family members of the officers that gave their lives to know that we don't forget".

"They were shot and killed while trying to arrest a subject", Coe said.

"This past Monday we added another name to our wall of heroes, Officer Rogelio Santander".

Citing recent ambush attacks of police officers, Trump said he directed the Justice Department "to do everything in its power to defend the lives of American law enforcement".

"Fortunately, Crawford County and Grayling doesn't have any", Coe said.

The president also shared several stories of fallen officers.

We most certainly must teach children that despite what they might see on television, the police are not the enemy.

It has also been on display Blue Light Ceremonies, which are held at churches to honor all first responders around the Christmas holiday who have died that year. "It's kind of sad when nobody's there", Kraklau said.

Dozens of people were on hand for the annual law enforcement memorial. These loyal companions have given their lives to ensure their handlers, fellow officers, and citizens stay safe.

Now, the internet and websites have sped up the process, along with research officers do on their own departments.

"We have a lot of community support for this", Cobb said. This year, Police Week runs from May 13 to May 19.
