'Things could have gone much worse': Former student is shot by officer during gunfire exchange at Dixon High School

A police officer at a northern IL high school was hailed as a hero Wednesday for shooting and arresting a former student who fired on him in a hallway while staff and seniors were meeting for a graduation rehearsal.

Authorities first got reports of an armed man on campus just after 8 a.m., police Chief Steve Howell said.

Officials said no one was injured in the confrontation. Dixon High School and all Dixon Public Schools are on lockdown.

Dallas shot and wounded a former student during the exchange of fire, "saving countless lives", said Sheriff John Simonton (John Simonton). He was shot by the school resource officer, according to the report.

The student and officer were not immediately named. Dixon is located about 100 miles west of Chicago.

The names of the shooter and officer are not being released at this time.

The shooting happened in the gym, where seniors were gathered for graduation practice, according to the Sauk Valley online paper.

Howell says the former student fired several shots near the school gymnasium and ran away when the officer confronted him.

Dixon City Manager Danny Langloss says in a release that a male suspect shot at a school resource officer inside the school around 8 a.m.

The officer returned fire, Langloss said, and the suspect was taken into custody with non-life-threatening injuries. The officer fired back, wounding the suspect, who was then taken into custody.

At the end of the news conference, Dixon School District Superintendent Margo Empen thanked law enforcement and the community for their support, and to parents, students and staff for their bravery.
