Video issued on the military's Twitter feed showed the bomb being detonated safely.

The defense forces tweeted "No injuries to IDF soldiers were reported".

The ministry identified those killed by tank fire as Hussein al-Amour, 25, and Abdul Haleem al-Naqa, 28.

A part of the investment to which the defense minister was referring apparently included the training of hundreds of sea commandos by the Hamas terrorist organization, which rules the Gaza Strip with an iron fist.

The third member succumbed to his wounds and died a few hours after the incident.

The Al-Quds Brigades group, which is linked to the the Islamic Jihad organisation, said it would retaliate for the killings, Haaretz reported.

Since then, Israel has been preparing for possible attacks by sea by Hamas, especially as the IDF has improved its ability to detect and destroy Hamas tunnels under the fence separating the Gaza Strip from Israel.

Two Palestinians have been killed early on Sunday in an Israeli bombardment in the Gaza Strip, officials said.

Israel says its actions are necessary to defend the border and stop mass incursions into its territory.

Low-level demonstrations along the border have continued since protests peaked on May 14, when at least 61 Palestinians were killed as tens of thousands of Gazans protested the U.S. transfer of its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

No Israelis have been killed during that time.

The soldiers arrived at the scene moments later and opened fire at the individuals, who in turn fled back to the Palestinian side of the fence, the Times said.

The death of the baby inflamed Palestinian passions and led to a deluge of condemnation against Israel for its heavy-handed response to the border protests.

In February, a senior navy officer warned that Hamas was increasingly turning to the sea to carry out attacks against Israeli troops and civilians.

An attack targeting an observation post on Sunday killed at least three people, including two fighters from the Islamic Jihad movement.
