"Obviously just didn't finish the way we wanted".

A frustrated Castroneves, who moved to Team Penske's sports vehicle team full time this season but returned to run the INDYCAR Grand Prix and Indy 500 this month, implored team owner Roger Penske to let him try again next May.

Her third-place finish in 2009 remains the best-ever result by a woman in the Indy 500 while her resume also includes a fourth in 2005 (her rookie debut) and sixth in 2006.

Power is considered by many to be the best IndyCar driver now competing. "He hated ovals and now he loves them", said Carpenter, the local boy who had dominated the early stages of the race.

"I just can't believe it", he said after the race. "I'll look forward. We have to be back next year". Near-record temperatures at the start created a slick, 2 -mile oval, and new cars with less downforce proved to be a handful for even the most experienced of drivers.

Defending champion Takuma Sato also crashed out after running into the back of James Davison's vehicle.

Unfortunately for DP, her career ends with this crash on Lap 68. Some two hours after the race, he was exhausted. She was the first driver to make a pit stop in hopes of making a few changes.

Close has marked Power's career with Team Penske since he joined the team full time in 2010. She lost control of the auto and hit hard in the outside wall, sliding back down across the track and into the inside barrier. Castroneves, Tony Kanaan, Sebastien Bourdais and Danica Patrick were among those who crashed in single-car spins.

She finished 30th, her lowest spot in eight starts at "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing". She decided long ago that the race that made her famous would be her last, and while she called the outcome disappointing, she also expressed appreciation for all that Indianapolis had given her. It's both of them. "He's been in his yellow suit - I don't think I've seen him out of his yellow suit since we got here this month". "It just seemed to come around and seemed pretty late off the corner".

Danica told ABC the source of her losing control: "Little bit of understeer and [the car] just swung". Foyt, four-time Champ Car series champion Sebastien Bourdais and three-time Indy 500 victor Helio Castroneves.

France's Sebastian Bourdais, back at Indy a year after he suffered hip and pelvic injuries in qualifying last year, three-time victor Helio Castroneves of Brazil and 2013 victor Tony Kanaan of Brazil also failed to make it to the finish. The Chevys were the fastest cars in the field and Team Penske had four equal chances to win. "I thought we had a good race vehicle".

He was just trying to survive, but as some quicker cars were coming through he got out into the build-up on the high line, he was off-throttle and Sato collected him.
