It’s a slow start for ‘Solo’ at the Box office

Star Wars was released in 1977 and has become one of the biggest film franchises in the history of cinema.

Fortunately, the large majority of concerns regarding the project were appeased when Solo flew into theaters.

Every new "Star Wars" film brings an excitement that can be felt throughout the galaxy.

"Solo" was the only wide release this weekend, meaning the rest of the North American box office consists of a series of holdovers. The title centered on the life and career of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg made $1.5 million on just 415 screens over the four-day weekend.

In the worldwide markets, "Solo", starring Alden Ehrenreich in the role made iconic by Harrison Ford, grossed $65 million in its opening weekend, including a paltry $10.1 million in China.

In third place, Disney and Marvel's superhero film "Avengers: Infinity War" brought in an estimated 16.5 million dollars in its fifth weekend.

"Solo", the second standalone "Star Wars" anthology film, has fallen far behind 2016's "Rogue One", which landed a three-day weekend opening of $155 million. Later on, however, those estimates lowered to an opening in the $130-$150 million range.

"Deadpool 2" should easily score the second slot, heading for a $42 million three-day sophomore frame and a four-day total of around $54 million. It is also way behind Rogue One.

"We are all over it, and will spend a lot of time digging into why things happened the way they did. We have a year and a half before Episode IX comes out", Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis says. During the film, Qi'ra alludes to the unsavory activities she has participated in as a member of the Crimson Dawn, though we don't see much evidence of this until she's tasked with taking down a guard.

"Solo" still boosts the domestic box office 23.1% compared to Memorial Day weekend in 2017, according to comScore. With the rejiggered production, the budget soared well past $250 million.

Fun, energetic but in desperate need of room for the writing and characters to breathe, Solo is entertaining but never compelling. Romantic comedy How Long Will I Love You topped the chart after drawing US$37 million for its debut weekend.
