The Caps will face the Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final at T-Mobile Arena on Monday night.

The Knights, who have been labelled the 'Golden Misfits' by some of the players, were given odds of 500-1 to win the title at the start of their inaugural campaign. Deryk Engelland added two assists. Reilly Smith had a goal and an assist and William Karlsson, Ryan Reaves and Colin Miller also scored goals for Vegas, who improved to 13-3 in the playoffs, and 7-1 at home.

Nosek's victor at 9:44 of the final period came after Vegas defenceman Shea Theodore moved down the sideboards and fed the wide-open winger for his second goal of the playoffs.

Nosek was in the right place at the right time for the decisive goal.

As happens sometimes in games with high stakes, the refs put away their whistles for a while, leading to an anything goes series of plays through the second and third period.

The Winnipeg-born Reaves scored the game-winner and series-clincher in Game 5 of the West final between Vegas and the Winnipeg Jets eight days ago.

Vegas coach Gerard Gallant called the hit "real late and real hard" and said he felt Wilson deserved a five-minute major. CBC Sports' Rob Pizzo looks at two players from each team who could take home the award as playoff MVP.

Carlson almost made it 4-3 on a power play later in the period, but Fleury got the shaft of his stick on the puck before it caromed off the part of the net where post meets crossbar. Vegas improved to 11-1 in the postseason when scoring first.

Washington tied it up at 14:14 when Connolly tipped his fifth between his own legs, off Miller's skate and beyond Fleury.

Marchessault spent time in the concussion quiet room but was allowed to return. [T.J.] Oshie. What a great club they've got. Ovechkin (12 goals, 22 points) carried them against Tampa Bay, supported by playoff scoring leader Kuznetsov.

The Golden Knights were the last ones standing on Monday night.

Fleury may not have another game like this one, so Holtby and the Capitals' team defence better find their response or this could be a short series. And while that would suggest the average margin of victory is only a hair more than one goal, most of the Game 1s in the best-of-seven era have ended in regulation.
