Body found in Maryland river as Alberto's remnants threaten Alabama

Memorial Day weather forecast: Warm, muggy day with an uncertain afternoon

Alberto is pushing deeper inland after making landfall in the Florida Panhandle on Memorial Day, causing flash flooding, mudslides, downed trees and power outages through parts of the South, East and central US, prompting officials to warn of an imminent dam failure in North Carolina.

As the first named storm of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, Subtropical Storm Alberto lumbered ashore Monday afternoon in the Florida Panhandle and then weakened overnight to a depression.

Areas west and east of the flash flood watch will also see likely some showers and thunderstorms today - and a locally flooding downpour isn't entirely out of the question in those areas, either.

Four deadly hurricanes struck the United States previous year, killing at least 144 people and causing billions of dollars in damage, massive power outages and devastating hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses, according to the NHC.

Those areas are expected to get more rain because the eastern side of the remnants of Alberto will bring more moisture to those regions, said Robert Beasley, a weather service meteorologist in Blacksburg, Va.

Two television journalists covering the worsening weather in North Carolina were killed on Monday by a falling tree that struck their auto. A flood watch is in effect through Wednesday morning for the northwestern part of the state because of the storm.

Alberto was more of a rainstorm than a wind threat, but the National Weather Service said at least one tornado had been confirmed.

Santa Rosa County officials had put out many piles of sand several days ago in case people wanted to make sandbags to mitigate any flooding in their homes.

"We've had a lot of rain, but we got lucky".

By late Tuesday, Alberto's center was moving over western Kentucky. WYFF-TV of Greenville, South Carolina, said news anchor Mike McCormick and photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer were killed. With the ground being saturated, root systems of trees are weaker.
