The Gaza Strip has been under Israeli blockade for more than a decade, with Israel saying it is necessary to prevent Hamas from obtaining means to attack.

The Islamic Jihad attack on southern Israel came less than a day after Israel and Russian Federation reportedly reached understandings on the presence of Iranian-backed forces on the Golan Heights near the Israeli border. He said the factions, including Islamic Jihad, would agree to the cease-fire as long as Israel did the same.

The Israel-Gaza border fell quiet on Wednesday under an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire after the most intense flareup of hostilities between Palestinian militants and Israel since a 2014 war.

Israeli cabinet minister Naftali Bennett, however, told Israel's Army Radio no agreement has been reached yet.

The military said it hit more than 80 of what it said were "terrorist" targets including Palestinian training camps, weapons depots and a smuggling tunnel that could be used for cross-border attacks.

Rockets are fired from inside the Gaza strip towards Israel on the sixth day of Israel's operation "Protective Edge" on July 13, 2014.

The confrontation followed weeks of deadly demonstrations and clashes along the Gaza-Israel border.

Several militant projectiles were shot down by Israel's Iron Dome rocket interceptor system, others landed in empty lots and farmland.

Later Tuesday, a rocket fired by Gaza Strip militants struck a building on Israeli territory key to supplying power to the southern part of the enclave, potentially worsening an already dire energy supply in the zone.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad also started to evacuate military bases and installations across Gaza in anticipation of the Israeli retaliation.

Daoud Shehab, an Islamic Jihad spokesman, said Egyptian officials had been in contact with the group to try to restore calm. Israeli soldiers have killed more than 120 Palestinians since March 30, most at protests dramatizing the Palestinian demand to reclaim land lost in the fighting surrounding Israel's 1948 creation.

After a day and a half of shelling, Israelis returned to their routines and children went back to school following the heaviest rocket attacks since the end of the 2014 Gaza conflict. No Israelis have been killed.

An earlier statement from the Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said that Israel was trying to reverse Indonesia's decision, but such efforts seem to have failed, prompting a reciprocal ban.

Hamas said in a statement Tuesday that "what the resistance carried out this morning comes within the framework of the natural right to defend our people".

Israel said it would be willing to respect the ceasefire, with Egypt acting as a moderating force.

But Israel has faced worldwide criticism and calls for an independent investigation over its use of live fire during the protests and border clashes. These attacks came after months of using Palestinian human shields as cover for other attacks on Israel.
