Afghan Insurgents Blast Their Way Into a Ministry

Seven attackers killed as Afghan forces stave off major terror bid

The area around the Afghan Interior Ministry was rocked by several loud explosions and gunfire on Wednesday, in what appeared to be the latest in a series of attacks in Kabul.

"PD1 police chief and two other policemen were killed in the attack and eight civilians were wounded", he said, adding "the building of PD1 police has also suffered damages". Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish said one policeman was killed and five were wounded. However, a United States government watchdog agency recently reported that it saw few signs that this strategy was working, while acknowledging that the Afghan security forces are getting better training.

The special-forces operation comes as attacks on Afghan security forces, district centers, and provincial capitals have increased since the announcement of the Taliban's annual spring offensive in April.

Wednesday's attack came hours after Taliban suicide bombers stormed a police station in Logar province south of Kabul, where three officers were killed.

He said the attackers set off a suicide vehicle bomb at the entrance to the station before three suicide bombers tried to enter. No one immediately claimed the attack.

An Afghan military spokesman says elite commando units have freed dozens of prisoners held by the Taliban, including women and children, in an early morning operation in southern Helmand province.

Afghan security forces patrol, after recapturing control of the city from Taliban militants, in Farah.

On May 30, the militants briefly seized a district headquarters in the Dasht-e Qala district in the northern province of Takhar "after seven hours of fighting and resistance", a spokesman for the provincial governor said.

"We think the meeting was to plan next steps", O'Donnell said. Nicholson said 50 of these commanders had been tracked to Musa Qala and targeted by USA rocket artillery.

Last week, a US government watchdog group said the administration's revamped strategy has made little progress against the Taliban insurgency, leaving the country a "dangerous and volatile" place almost 17 years after the USA invaded. Numerous strikes have also targeted the Taliban's drug labs.

"We broke their dream so that they will never try to attack military installations particularly the minister of interior", Danish said.
