A well-known Russian journalist and writer who was reported murdered in Kiev dramatically reappeared alive on Wednesday in the middle of a briefing about his own killing by the Ukrainian state security service, shocking the world.

Konstantin Kosachev, head of the global affairs committee of the upper house of the Russian parliament, compared Ukraine's allegations to Britain's claims that Moscow was behind the nerve gas poisonings of a Russian former spy and his daughter in England.

He then startled everyone there by inviting the 41-year-old reporter into the room.

Agency Chief Vasily Gritsak said the killing was ordered by "Russian special services" and there was "indisputable evidence of the terrorist activity of Russian special forces in Ukraine".

Moscow hopes foreign partners and worldwide institutes will draw appropriate conclusions from the situation around the simulated assassination of Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko.

"I am sorry, but there were no options here", Babchenko said at the presser.

The weird scenes were a shock to everyone - including Mr Babchenko's wife, who received an apology from her husband for faking his own death.

"I'm still alive", an uneasy-looking Babchenko said with a straight face.

Just hours before his staged death, Babchenko wrote on Twitter about his fortune back in 2014, when he was refused travel on a Ukrainian military helicopter.

"I have buried friends and colleagues and I know the sickening feeling".

"I am outraged by this horrific act", Mr Desir said in an earlier statement.

The unidentified Ukrainian man in turn hired an acquaintance who had fought in the separatist war in eastern Ukraine as the gunman. He said Ukrainian law enforcement had been aware of a contract on his head for two months. Russian officials also criticized Ukraine for failing to provide adequate protection to journalists. "It is the duty of the state to provide correct information to the public", said Deniz Yazici of the media freedom office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

"I would like to apologise for what you have all had to go through", Mr Babchenko, who looked on the verge of tears at times, told reporters. "That's really helpful to all who care about journalists' safety".

Babchenko, 41, rose to fame as a war correspondent in Russian Federation.

Babchenko, a Kremlin critic, left Russian Federation past year after criticizing the Moscow government.

The journalist said his home address was published online and the threats he received were made by phone, email and social media.

Over the last two years, the streets of Kiev have witnessed the murders of two Russians critical of the Kremlin, former lawmaker Denis Voronenkov and investigative journalist Pavel Sheremet. In December 2016, Babchenko had written a Facebook post - about the Kremlin's actions in Aleppo, Syria - which was deemed "insufficiently patriotic" by authorities.

Babchenko, a former soldier in the Chechen war who became one of Russia's best-known war correspondents, left his homeland fearing for his life after criticising Russian policy in Ukraine and Syria.
