Another 20 people have been injured, and more than 2,000 evacuated near the volcano and several cities, including Antigua.

He said on radio a river of lava has overwhelmed a village.

Seven people have been killed and 20 hurt after a volcano near Guatemala City exploded in a fiery display of ash and lava.

The Volcan de Fuego in Guatemala has erupted, shooting ash 10 km into the air and blanketing villages within 25km of the crater.

National Disaster Coordinator Sergio Cabanas said an undetermined number of people were missing following the eruption of the Volcan de Fuego, which is 44 kilometres from Guatemala City.

Around 3,100 people have been evacuated from nearby communities into shelters.

One video published by news outlet Telediario purportedly taken in the El Rodeo village showed three bodies strewn atop a lava flow, as rescuers arrived to attend to an elderly man caked from head to toe in ash and mud.

The Guatemalan government says around one million people have been affected by the eruption.

Ash has effected not only Guatemala City but the departments of Sacatepequez, Chimaltenango, Escuintla, and the popular tourist destination colonial town Antigua.

Dense ash blasted out by the volcano - which rises to 12,346 feet - also shut down Guatemala City's global airport, civil aviation said. The news outlet also said the Guatemalan military was providing help which includes clearing volcanic ash from La Aurora airport's runway.

The volcano's peak soars 3,763 meters above sea level.

A volcano southwest of Guatemala's capital has erupted for the second time this year, setting off loud explosions and spewing ash almost four miles into the sky.

In a video circulating on social media, a black cloud of ash could be seen rising from just beyond the golf club.

Eddy Sanchez, director of the country's seismology and volcanology institute, said the flows reached temperatures of about 700 C.

A disaster authority spokesman said a change in wind direction was to blame for the volcanic ash falling on parts of the capital.
