Lava continues to pour into Kapoho Bay

That's a lot of lava, but flow volumes can be extraordinarily hard to measure, the USGS said.

The molten lava on the island of Hawaii has destroyed what officials said may be hundreds of homes, including a vacation home of the island's mayor, Harry Kim, as a spewing vent has sent a wide, slow-moving river of lava into a residential community and the sea beyond it on the island's east side.

USGS' Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said Monday that parts of the channelized flow from a fissure were starting to break out and move north. Officials had previously been updating the number of structures burned because it was hard to tell from aerial surveys which were homes or other buildings.

Mehana Kihoi hands out goods to Leilani Estate evacuees at the community organized Pu'uhonua o Puna, a center to help those affected by the recent lava eruption, in Pahoa, Hawaii, May 29, 2018.

He said at least 117 homes had now been destroyed in the four weeks since lava began flowing and that the number was expected to grow as there were many more damaged homes to count. Okabe described the area as a mix of vacation rentals and year-round residences.

Hundreds of homes on Hawaii's Big Island have been destroyed from lava oozing from the Kilauea volcano after an early morning explosion on Tuesday, according to officials.

One finger of the lava poured into a small freshwater lake, boiling away all its water late on Saturday, while another finger spilled into Kapoho Bay on Sunday night, officials said.

Mounting property losses were reported a day after five or six people who initially chose to stay in the newly evacuated Kapoho area after road access was cut off were rescued by helicopter, according to the Hawaii County Civil Defense agency. This eruption has lasted longer than the 1955 and 1924 eruptions, the USGS said.

Fissure 8 is very active and producing a large channelized flow that is filling in Kapoho Bay.

There have been various arrests of people forcing their way through blocked areas. "Refusing to evacuate may put you, your family and first responders in danger".

As the threat of lava blocking planned the two highway escape routes, contractors have been bulldozing an alternative escape route through the adjacent Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
