President Donald Trump slammed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as "meek and mild" on Saturday while declaring that he won't endorse a joint statement drafted by G7 leaders following their summit in Quebec.

President Trump concluded his visit to the Group of Seven summit on Saturdaywith warnings to USA allies, saying if they don't eliminate barriers to trade, they could lose access to the US economy.

At the summit, Trump played a wild card, suggesting that rather than both sides boosting retaliatory tariffs - as he has just done on steel and aluminum - they could declare for entirely free trade in the G7 zone.

"Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable but we also will not be pushed around", Trudeau, the host of the two-day summit in La Malbaie, Quebec, told reporters.

"If they retaliate, they're making a mistake", Trump said.

"We're either going to have NAFTA in a better negotiated form or we're going to have two deals", the USA president said.

Leaders of the G7 nations on Saturday papered over the cracks in their alliance at a summit in Canada but came away with little more than an agreement to disagree on trade, as Trump defiantly brandished his "America First" agenda.

Mr Trump made the comments after the communique had already been officially released in response to a press conference held by Justin Trudeau to mark the close of the summit.

As the leaders of the top industrialised democracies began meeting ahead of the G7 summit in Quebec, European leaders warned that Trump's stance threatens the Western-led world order.

Alluding to the tensions as he sat with Macron on Friday, Trump said: "We've had, really, a very good relationship, very special. And no subsidies. I even said, 'no tariffs!'" Trump insisted.

It is an annual summit bringing together Canada, the USA, the UK, France, Italy, Japan and Germany, which represent more than 60% of global net worth between them.

Asked whether she was concerned the President could pull out of the trip if a trade war with the European Union escalates, Mrs May said Mr Trump had said was looking forward to the trip.

Trump also repeated an earlier proposal that US trading partners should drop all trade barriers, including tariffs and subsidies to industries and producers in their own countries.

"On NAFTA we either leave it the way it is as a three-some deal with Canada, the United States and Mexico and change it very substantially - we're talking about very big changes. Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!"

The EU and Canada have taken steps to retaliate.

He also defended the wisdom of his controversial tariffs, saying that the USA would win a trade war against its allies because "they do so much more business with us than we do with them". Canada and Mexico are also taking action in retaliation.

"The nature of the debate we had was rather appeasement and it stopped the escalation in terms of behavior", Macron, who had exchanged terse Twitter messages with Trump in the run-up to the summit, told reporters.
