Canada dispute escalates after tense G7, Europeans criticise Trump

President Trump's chief economic adviser accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of stabbing the US and fellow G-7 negotiators in the back with "amateurish" verbal attacks during a domestic press conference.

After leaving the G7 summit on Saturday, Trump accused the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of "false statements" and said the United States would be imposing tariffs on vehicle imports.

Trump also renewed attacks on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who had hosted the G7 meeting in Quebec.

On June 2, the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dubbed the trade tariffs "insulting and unacceptable" and announced that the country would impose its own tariffs on US' goods in retaliation.

Navarro, in his interview on Fox, said Trump "did the courtesy to Justin Trudeau to travel up to Quebec for that summit" and that Trump had "bigger things on his plate" than the G7 meeting, namely his planned meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore. John McCain, who said Americans would continue to stand with the nation's historical allies.

The announcement came after the president left the summit, which while in attendance he had announced he wants to put an end to the United States' status as the world's "piggy bank" and suggested eliminating trade barriers between allies. "Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!" the US president tweeted. "After many decades, fair and reciprocal Trade will happen!"

The actions of Trump have been severely criticised by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Trump also targeted Trudeau on Twitter this weekend after the talks, saying Trudeau's "false statements" led him to decide not to sign the G7 communique.

Mr Trudeau did not immediately respond, but his office said on Saturday after Mr Trump withdrew support for the communique that the Prime Minister had not said anything in his closing news conference he has not said to Mr Trump before.

"Trump declared that the trading policy of foreign countries with the USA is unfair, claiming that there is an "$800 Billion Trade Deficit", a figure that is as yet unsubstantiated by expert research.

"And then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door". Trump said in a second tweet.

The communique was supposed to illustrate shared ground between the US, Germany, the UK, Canada, France, Italy and Japan following Mr Trump's imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminium imports.

Some 75 per cent of Canadian exports go to the United States, making Canada uniquely vulnerable to a United States trade war.

He insists, like Trump himself has done many times, and that Canada has enormous tariffs itself - especially on certain dairy and food products.

Kudlow was speaking following the G7 summit in Canada Saturday.
