India gears up to celebrate 4th International Yoga Day

Since coming to power in 2014, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken yoga as an emblem of India's flourishing in the world, pushing for the United Nations resolution that has since 2015 consecrated June 21 as International Yoga Day.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has played a significant role in reviving the traditional yoga not only within the country but also across the world.

Modi, in his video address, said that in just a matter of three years, the International Yoga Day had grown into a worldwide public movement and has become an integral part of public life in many countries.

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev led a gathering in the western state of Rajasthan, whose chief minister said it was the largest group yoga event.

Yoga connect people from different nations and different walks of life, it fosters a sense of harmony among fellow beings and with the rest of the universe. Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said yoga reflects India's "soft power" globally.

Addressing a large gathering with the British-era Friday building against the backdrop, Modi said yoga has shown the world the way from "illness to wellness" and enriching lives across the globe.

However in its present-day use, yoga is often no more than a form of exercise, Michael says.
