The bite to the cheek caused Todd's face to swell dramatically but he is expected to recover

The golden retriever named Todd was on a hike with his owner Paula Goodwin in Anthem, Arizona, on Friday when the pair came across a rattlesnake.

The retriever, Todd, and his owner, Paula Godwin, were walking early Friday morning down 7th Street and Carefree Highway when Godwin nearly stepped on a rattlesnake, according to Godwin's Facebook post.

Godwin had already walked her dogs to the top of the trail and was headed back down when the snake bit Todd.

Godwin said Todd jumped right in front of her leg where she "surely would have got bit". "Please say a little prayer for my sweet hero", she said. "Then, that's when he struck Todd and then he started to rattle".

Paula said of the fundraiser: "Todd wants to help more puppies that may need help". However, the money raised is not going to be used for Todd's medical bills.

Heroic pup. Todd is home and back to being a puppy again, according to his owner Paula Godwin.

It is not an low-priced treatment.

The courageous pup is expected to fully recover. But Todd hasn't been fazed by the incident, with Godwin saying he's been a playful puppy, "just acting like nothing happened".

Todd took the bite, right to the face.

'This is what a hero looks like.
