Aaron Finch posts 172 runs for highest T20I score

Finch powered his way to 172, beating his own world record high score in Twenty20 Internationals.

1 - Aaron Finch and D'Arcy Short became the first pair to put on 200 runs for a partnership in T20I cricket. When Finch departed, rather bizarrely by being hit wicket, he had become the highest run scorer in T20I. The 31-year-old just needed 50 balls to bring up his hundred, his second in T20Is.

His knock included a mind-boggling 16 fours and 10 sixes as the hard-hitting opener scored at a strike rate of 226.32.

"It's nice to break my own record", said Finch.

After toying with Zimbabwe bowlers, Finch told the host broadcaster, "It feels good".

He plundered 16 fours and 10 sixes in the highest individual innings in T20 worldwide cricket, which only ended when he overbalanced chasing a wide one and hit wicket off the penultimate delivery of the innings.

The wickets continued to tumble thereafter, with Andrew Tye claiming a hugely impressive 3-11 from his four overs, and slow-left-arm spinner Ashton Agar pitching in with 2-16 as Zimbabwe crumbled to 129-9, slipping to a second defeat in two. It's coming on quite nicely.

Zimbabwe play Pakistan in the next match of the Tri-Series in Harare on Wednesday.

Behind Finch's two top scores, Maxwell is next on the all-time T20I record list after he belted an unbeaten 145 against Sri Lanka in 2016.

Batting against Zimbabwe in Harare, the explosive opener passed the 156 he made against England in 2013, and was then able to get Chris Gayle's 175 in his sights.

Australia took 75 from the Powerplay, with Finch doing the bulk of the scoring while Short was content to turn the strike over to his big-hitting partner.

"The wicket played better than we thought".
