The Lakers Have Renounced Julius Randle

Julius Randle is joining the Pelicans on a two-year, $18 million pact.

Last year, the 32-year-old Rondo averaged 8.3 points and 8.2 assists in 65 games with the Pelicans.

The Lakers originally gave him a qualifying offer, which made Randle a restricted free agent.

Los Angeles also added veteran big man JaVale McGee and swingman Lance Stephenson and retained shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope on Sunday.

Sources told ESPN that Randle requested that the Lakers renounce him, sparing him what he believed would be a reduced role in a return to the team.

Cousins was in line for a max deal last season until he tore his achilles tendon while playing for the New Orleans Pelicans.

A person with knowledge of the situation says Rondo has agreed to sign a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Fiesty guard Rajon Rondo is heading to the LA Lakers.

The unrestricted free agent agreed to the deal a day after free agent LeBron James chose to bolt from the Cleveland Cavaliers in order to join the Lakers.

The question now is what the Lakers would do with their 2017 2nd overall pick Lonzo Ball, who plays the same position as the former Boston Celtics Rondo. Randle is more of a ball-handler and off-the-dribble threat.

The Lakers could create additional cap space this summer by trading Luol Deng and his $18 million salary for the next two seasons, but partners would seem to be scarce.

He has career averages of 13.5 points and 8.9 rebounds in 238 National Basketball Association games (182 starts).

Randle, 23, was the last player on the roster to have played with Kobe Bryant, who retired following the 2015-16 season.
