Defending hot dog eating champion sets new record

Crowds will flock to Coney Island on Wednesday to watch a time-honored holiday tradition: the Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest.

My own hot dog eating has dropped off in the last few years since going vego, as soy versions just don't quite cut the mustard (ahem), but legendary wiener-scoffer Joey "Jaws" Chestnut hasn't been slacking off, and has just claimed a new hot dog eating world yet again. (Nathan's was also once the world's largest hot dog stand, with each dog costing 20 cents a pop.) In ten minutes, the world's top competitive eaters get to try to consume as many hot dogs as possible.

The Las Vegas competitor fell short of the 41 hot dogs she consumed a year ago but still beat out second-place finisher Michelle Lesco, of Tucson, Arizona.

The champion outdid himself: Joey Chestnut shattered the hot dog eating record he set in 2017 (72 hot dogs, buns and all) and ate 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes on this sweltering, humid July 4th day at Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest. The annual Coney Island competition has become a phenomenon over the years.

Who knew eating hot dogs could be an extreme sport?!

Three years ago, Matt "The Megatoad" Stonie, 26, ended Chestnut's eight-year winning streak. But, we're sure Miki is not anxious about that as both she and Joey get to take home $10,000 for their big win!

NY native and defending champion Miki Sudo chomped down 37 hotdogs and buns, making her a five time victor of the women's contest. And this year, the man went a step ahead to break the record and walk away with $10,000 prize.

New Jersey native Carmen Cincotti finished second by eating 64 hot dogs.

"I doubt we can put a microchip in the tongue or in the esophagus", Shea said.

Miki Sudo is looking for her third consecutive win in the women's competition.

Each man was given 12 minutes to chow down on as many hot dogs as they could.

This year's was a scorcher: Temperatures hovered near 90 degrees when the parade began late Wednesday morning, and some marchers were treated for heat exhaustion and taken off the route.
