His former clerks recall Kavanaugh as a demanding boss, but one interested in their personal lives.

Judge Kavanaugh, 53, referenced his Catholic faith and evinced an "originalist" view of the law - holding that the Constitution must be interpreted conservatively.

Prior to his time as a judge he oversaw an investigation into the death of a deputy counsel for President Bill Clinton. He also led the investigation into the suicide of Clinton aide Vince Foster. He is probably best known for his ties to President George W. Bush. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME were widely identified as the two lawmakers most likely to break with their party, given both their support of abortion rights, and the view that Kennedy's replacement had potential to be more conservative than he was in this regard.

Many senators, including Capito, said the nomination process should wait until after the election.

Martha Kavanaugh taught high school history before returning to school for her law degree.

A Yale University graduate, Kavanaugh has demonstrated his conservative credentials on numerous occasions, including when he opposed Obamacare, the sweeping universal health insurance plan unveiled under Trump's Democratic predecessor Barack Obama.

"The far right has total control of the Congress, they have total control of the administration, now they want total control of the judiciary, and I'm just not going to allow that to happen and I'm going to keep fighting against it", he said. "I think these are judges who have been vetted, they've received votes, they've received, in many cases, bipartisan support".

"For the last 12 years, he has served as a judge on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals with great distinction, authoring 300 opinions, which have been widely admired for their skill, insight and rigorous adherence to the law", Trump said as Kavanaugh stood nearby with his wife and their two daughters in the East Room of the White House.

Before announcing his choice, Trump paused a moment to thank Kennedy for a lifetime of service. So it's in the president's interest to pick someone who can be confirmed quickly.

Others, however, perceived time was of the essence. Like Trump's first nominee a year ago, Justice Neil Gorsuch, Kavanaugh would be a young addition who could help remake the court for decades to come with rulings that could restrict abortion, expand gun rights and roll back key parts of Obamacare.

As a Democrat in a red state, Jones faces more pressure to support the President than other Democrats in the Senate already opposing Trump's potential nominee.

"We are close to making a decision", Trump said. In January, the full appeals court upheld the legality of the CFPB structure and said the director could be fired only for cause.

In recent years the Supreme Court has made landmark decisions on fundamental and often politically charged issues ranging from same-sex marriage, abortion, gun rights, corporate money in elections, and free speech. Some conservatives have questioned his commitment to social issues like abortion.

The coming battle over a Supreme Court nominee promises to be a bruising one.

Kennedy, who is 81, had been nominated for the court by President Ronald Reagan in 1987.

The nomination is Trump's second to the nation's highest court, a rare presidential privilege that could seal a key part of Trump's legacy less than two years into his first term.

The US Supreme Court is the ultimate arbiter on contentious laws and disputes between states and the federal government. But conservatives are still generally expected to rally around his selection.

The president hasn't indicated the leading candidate, only saying "an exceptional person will be chosen".

Meanwhile, the Senate's top Democrat wasted no time in sharing his displeasure at Trump's choice to replace Justice Kennedy. As an outsider candidate, people wanted to know who he might put on the Supreme Court, particularly since there was an open seat on the court for the next president to fill, which is rare.
