Trump says NK will honour denuclearisation 'contract'

North Korea says it won’t bow down to “gangster-like” U.S. on denuclearization

North Korea says it won’t bow down to “gangster-like” U.S. on denuclearization

"The establishment of peaceful relations between the countries, increased security assurances to North Korea and its people, and finally, denuclearization", Pompeo said.

-North Korea talks, the government also suggested it was taking a cautiously optimistic view of events.

Pompeo spoke with Trump, Bolton and White House chief of staff John Kelly on Saturday before his second round of meetings with Kim Yong Chol.

The statement was sure to fuel growing skepticism in the USA and elsewhere over how serious Kim is about giving up his nuclear arsenal.

North Korea called the outcome of the discussion "worrisome" and argued that the "cancerous issues" the U.S. delegation raised were the same ones that had "amplified" distrust and the risk of war with past administrations, resulting in previous talks ending in failure.

"We talked about what the North Koreans are continuing to do and how it's the case that we can get our arms around achieving what Chairman Kim and President Trump both agreed to", he said.

Pompeo brushed the negative comments aside during a press briefing in Tokyo on July 8 and again in Afghanistan on July 9, saying that the two sides made progress during the talks.

"Their statement is typical North Korean negotiating style", Duyeon Kim, a visiting fellow at the Korean Peninsula Future Forum in Seoul, said in an email.

"I have confidence that Kim Jong Un will honor the contract we signed &, even more importantly, our handshake", Trump wrote.

The North has declared Mr Trump's moves as "gangster-like" since the summit between the two leaders.

The North's state media normally lead their television bulletins and front pages with Kim's doings, but a seven-day absence from the headlines, including during Pompeo's visit, had prompted speculation on his whereabouts among Korea-watchers.

According to the Pentagon, North Korean officials have indicated in the past that they have the remains of as many as 200 USA troops. "But this expectation and hope of ours was so naive as to be gullible", the statement said.

He claimed that "When we spoke to them about denuclearization, they did not push back" but admitted the "road ahead will be hard and challenging". It also underscores crucial gaps in how the USA and North Korea define denuclearization and see the path forward.

Pompeo said the discussion had been productive.

As diplomatic engagement increases contact between the two Koreas and reduces hostility across the border, authorities may be anxious ordinary North Koreans might view the South favorably.

His two days of talks with senior North Korean officials had "made progress", and included a "detailed and substantive discussion about the next steps towards a fully verified and complete denuclearization, he said".

North Korea calls talks with the United States "regrettable" while Secretary of State Pompeo says the discussions were productive; former US ambassador to the U.N. Bill Richardson weighs in on 'Sunday Morning Futures'.

"I am convinced that he understands the commitment he made, and I am hopeful we will find a path forward to achieve the commitment that Chairman Kim himself made personally to President (Donald) Trump, and the world, in a signed agreement".
