"There is smoke all over and paramedics are on the scene", eNCA news quoted a local police spokesman as saying.

"Their injuries range from minor to critical", he said.

Eyewitnesses described seeing the plane attempt to veer toward Wonderboom airport, then hearing an explosion.

The plane, which had been expected to arrive at the Aviodrome on Jul 23, "crashed in South Africa during take-off on a test flight", it said.

"We had one deceased patient, the identity will be confirmed later".

There is no information about how many people were on board the plane.

The Aviodrome aerospace theme park in the Netherlands said on its Facebook page that it was "hugely shocked" by the crash.

"We are not sure what happened at this stage", Rosella Passier, the Aviodrome's marketing manager, told AFP in The Hague.

ER24 later said on its Twitter feed that one fatality had since been reported from the scene, and that it had occured "in the cockpit".

It was not clear what had caused the crash and the statement did not mention the name of the airline but photos showed the words "Martin's Air Charter" on the body of the plane.

Pieterse says Civil Aviation Authority will be investigating the crash.
