Trump names EU a global foe, raps media before Putin summit

It comes days after special counsel Robert Mueller's indictment of 12 Russian military intelligence agents, who are accused of interfering in the 2016 election by hacking Democrats' emails and computer networks.

Trump left for Helsinki on Sunday after labelling Russian Federation "a foe", along with the European Union and China, in an interview aired on the eve of his first one-on-one summit with the Kremlin boss. The president also met with Queen Elizabeth II and later spoke favorably about her, calling her a "tremendous woman".

US President Donald Trump quickly sent congratulations to France after their World Cup win over Croatia on Sunday, and also praised Russia's president for hosting the tournament.

"The collective blood pressure between the United States and Russian Federation is off-the-charts high so it's a good thing these presidents are getting together", he said.

US intelligence agencies have said the meddling was aimed at helping the Trump campaign and harming the election bid of his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton.

With the same attention to detail that he devoted to campaign ads, Trump masterminded numerous looks for his meeting with Kim, including the leaders' dramatic initial greeting and handshake and, later, their one-on-one time.

"The stories you heard about the 12 Russians yesterday took place during the Obama Administration, not the Trump Administration", Trump tweeted.

Bolton pointed to an agreement the Russians have with the European Union "that looks a lot like an extradition treaty", noting the Kremlin chooses to ignore that anyway. But I certainly, I'll be asking about it.

"I think it'd be a moot point; I don't think Russian Federation is sending anyone back over here for trial, the same way we wouldn't send anybody over there for trial", the Kentucky senator said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union".

While Trump's administration has been tough on Russia over Ukraine - sending lethal arms to the Ukrainian government, expanding sanctions on Russians for their involvement, and supporting the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which monitors the war - Trump has expressed doubts.

Paul said both countries spy on each other but adds that Russian interference in the 2016 election isn't "morally equivalent" to USA interference in Russian elections, but "I think in their mind it is".

Mr. Huntsman, who is in Helsinki for the Trump-Putin powwow, said Russia's takeover of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 is on the agenda. Bolton told ABC News that the indictment strengthened Trump's hand before his meeting with Putin.

For Trump, the formal meeting with Putin is an opportunity to develop a closer working relationship with the Russian president.

The president opened his first meeting with Putin - it lasted more than two hours last July in Hamburg, Germany - by pressing Putin on Russian election meddling and Putin denied being involved, according to US officials who described the meeting afterward.

His meeting with North Korea's Kim Jong Un ended with a decision by Trump to end US-South Korean military exercises, much to the surprise of Seoul and Tokyo.

Speaking in an interview with CBS Evening News aired Sunday, the U.S. president also sought to temper expectations about how much could be achieved. Bolton described the meeting as "unstructured", saying: "We're not looking for concrete deliverables here".

"The very fact that we have our heads of state getting together for this kind of conversation is a big, big delivery", Huntsman said.

A billboard is pictured on Presidents Donald Trump's route from the airport to his meeting with Russia's President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki. "Trump will be responsive to that tack", she said.

"I think the DNC (Democratic National Committee) should be ashamed of themselves for allowing themselves to be hacked", he said.

Even Republican lawmakers are anxious about the Putin meeting, a rare public acknowledgement of their heartburn over Trump's unconventional approach.

Trump raised the meddling issue during his first meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg previous year.
