Harley-Davidson was launching lightweight motorcycles in Asia and electric bikes globally in hopes of reviving demand, as it faces falling sales in the United States and the threat of trade tariffs adding to its costs, Reuters reported. According to Harley Davidson, the bike will have a commanding riding position which will allow the rider to "see the world from another point of view", while having the ability to "travel coast-to-coast".

Industry experts have said electric motorcycles - that have no gears or clutch and are a far cry from Harley's loud, bulky cruising bikes - may not appeal to loyal Harley fans.

The company's growth plan through 2022 includes attracting those who have never owned a motorcycle, developing smaller urban dealerships and "unlocking new markets and segments", the company said in a statement Monday. The plan is meant to support H-D's 2027 market objectives with the addition of several new models, including a couple outside its traditional cruiser market.

H-D have stated that the machine will be expected some time in 2020 alongside a new custom model and also a quite handsome looking 975cc Streetfighter model.

Harley said it plans to develop a more accessible motorcycle with a small-displacement engine of between 250cc and 500cc for Asia through an alliance with a manufacturer in the region.

"The company believes its accelerated strategy is in line with and reinforces its objectives to drive revenue growth and expand operating margins", it said. Harley-Davidson will also open smaller storefronts in urban areas.

"I would be more inclined to buy it than I would a traditional motorcycle", said Kay, 25, adding that she rode a moped in high school and college and thinks the smaller, electric models would be easier to navigate in the city. Aesthetically, all three models are different from the current crop of Harley-Davidson's signature heritage cruiser designs. If it pushes through, this is potentially huge news for our market, where the Harley-Davidson name has been mostly associated with big bikes.

Harley Davidson is not alone.

Trump responded with a tweet critical of Harley-Davidson. Another key part of this bold project is partnering with an Indian manufacturer to create a "small displacement motorcycle bridge" for HD. It's worth mentioning here that Shedjale is also responsible for designing the Harley-Davidson Street Rod, a sportier iteration of the Harley-Davidson Street 750.
