Pennsylvania reaches deal to halt distribution of 3D gun-printing materials

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, Gov. Tom Wolf (D), and the Pennsylvania State Police filed a lawsuit to prevent Defense Distributed from distributing plans for its 3D printed gun in that state.

Wilson owns Defense Distributed, which sued the U.S. State Department in 2015 for prohibiting online file share for 3-D guns.

The company said in court that they began distributing gun files early and that 1,000 people had downloaded 3-D plans for AR-15s since Friday.

In its statement, Shapiro's office said it would continue to pursue a more lasting solution in the form of an injunction. Durkan said while she was the U.S. Attorney for Western Washington her office considered 3D-printed guns a unsafe threat for countering terrorism, especially in how the plastic guns could be brought onto commercial flights.

They say they are "ghost guns" that would be untraceable with no serial numbers and no background checks.

Attorneys general from several states, including CT, as well as the District of Columbia, sued the Trump Administration on Monday over its decision.

Wilson's website welcomed the news by announcing that "the age of the downloadable gun formally begins", according to CNN.

Defense Distributed agreed to temporarily block Pennsylvania residents from downloading the plans after state officials went to federal court in Philadelphia on Sunday seeking an emergency order.

In 2013, the designer, Cody Wilson, who is also a gun activist, posted the plans online, only to have the government tell him to take them down, arguing the plans could violate worldwide traffic in arms regulations.

US District Judge Robert Pitman in Austin, Texas denied the request the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, Everytown for Gun Safety and the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence at a hearing.

Update, 6:03p.m. PT: Adds the lawsuit has now officially been filed.

At issue is a June settlement between the USA government and Texas-based Defense Distributed company that will allow it to legally publish gun blueprints online.

"Letter takes only vague and general positions regarding nuisance and negligence law", responded Defense Distributed to the New Jersey letter. "It's a far reach for these state officers to say they have a power that trumps the First Amendment".

The administration of US President Donald Trump failed to explain why it settled the case and allowed the publication of the blueprints, Ferguson said.

But several efforts to stymie Defense Distributed have hit roadblocks.

Second Amendment Foundation founder and executive vice president Alan Gottlieb countered the type of arguments employed by Ferguson, saying, "You can not exercise the right to keep and bear arms without being able to buy or make your own firearm".
