ED blames MDC Alliance leaders for violence

A voter has their finger marked ahead of casting a vote in the Zimbabwean elections on 30 July 2018

Observers say the race between Mr Mnangagwa's Zanu-PF party and Mr Chamisa's MDC Alliance is extremely tight.

The MDC did not immediately respond to the parliamentary figures but its presidential contender Nelson Chamisa, 40, said the presidential results were being faked.

European Union observers on Wednesday criticised the Zimbabwe elections for being held on an "un-level playing field" as the opposition MDC protested against alleged widespread fraud by the election authority and ruling party.

The security forces opened fire with guns, water cannons and tear gas, and protesters burned cars and threw rocks as helicopters hovered above Harare.

Robert Mugabe's old party Zanu PF have claimed victory in the first election held in Zimbabwe since the former dictator was pushed out of office past year. The EU mission questioned why presidential votes were counted first but were being announced last.

The vote attracted a high turnout of 70% and was monitored by global observers.

As vote counting from the Zimbabwe's historic Presidential and Parliamentary elections held on Monday July 30 continues, the elections body, Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has released results from most of the constituencies, putting the ruling ZANU-PF in the lead.

Opposition leader Chamisa accused the ZANU-PF of trying to steal the election.

He tweeted: "We won the popular vote & will defend it!"

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has yet to release even preliminary results, but it has five days to release the final tally, and it says it is confident of doing so within that time frame.

The country's commission said Thursday could be the day the results are announced and that a majority of the presidential results are at its national centre.

"You can't rig our election...this is a military government", the crowd shouted.

Police spokeswoman Charity Charamba said the three people killed were yet to be identified.

That would be required if no candidate wins at least 50 percent of the ballots cast by Zimbabwe's 5.6 million voters in the first round.

Meanwhile, EU observers have said the election was largely peaceful, but the use of state resources, coercion and bias by "traditional leaders" meant a level playing field was not "truly achievable".

The tension in Harare grew after officials from the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) accused the electoral authorities of stealing their win after a delay in official results.

"The atmosphere has remained peaceful" and the commission has not received any major complaints about the election, she said.

Supporters of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change party react as they block a street in Harare, Zimbabwe.

MDC Alliance's Tendai Biti said there was a clear attempt by Zanu-PF to interfere "with the people's will" and warned the party not to "plunge Zimbabwe into chaos".
