According to Waas, "people familiar with the matter" have told him that both Priebus and McGahn also testified to Special Counsel Robert Mueller that they personally provided this information to Trump during a January 26, 2017 meeting.

Giuliani told CNN on Monday that it remains unlikely that Trump will agree to answer questions from Mueller about Russian interference in the election and whether the president obstructed justice by trying to thwart the investigation.

President Donald Trump, contradicting past denials of campaign coordination with Russian Federation, today claimed such "collusion is not a crime".

"It's just flat-out untrue", Mr Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, said on "Fox News Sunday" about the claims.

"My client didn't do it, and even if he did it, it's not a crime", Giuliani said. Three: "It's a crime to steal things, whether you steal objects, like everything that was ripped off in Watergate, or you steal email, which is what is at issue in Mueller's latest indictment".

"The president didn't hack", Giuliani said. Instead, he shifted the conversation by noting that the president did not "pay them for hacking", which he said was the real offense. "It's like his "aloha" - it means both 'hello" and 'I'm guilty.'" But Trump and his team "have recently rebranded, and are using a new phrase that Trump tweeted out this morning: "'Collusion is not a crime, '" he added.

Critics saw Giuliani's statements as indicative that the president's defense against accusations of working with Russian contacts to help him win the election is rapidly unraveling. Trump wrote on Twitter.

"He erased them, sure", he said, adding that the Trump legal team has "experts going through it".

On Monday, Giuliani, in a series of confusing media interviews, also accused Cohen, as well as Cohen's lawyer, Lanny Davis, of incorrectly describing the attendees of various meetings that involved top figures in the Trump campaign around that same time period.

According to CNN, Cohen alleges that he was present, along with others, when Trump was informed of the Russians' offer of dirt on Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, and that the president signed off on the idea to meet with them.

Fox News reported liberal icon Alan Dershowitz speculated that Mueller hopes the charges he filed against Paul Manafort will force the onetime Trump campaign manager to reveal something incriminating about the president.

But the U.S. lawyer snapped back in sarcasm and said: "Oh yeah, you scared me away".
