Trump administration: North Korea missile moves don't undermine peace push

North Korea handed over the remains of what US officials said are believed to be the remains of U.S servicemen who fought during the Korean War.

After a solemn ceremony at the USA military's Osan Air Base in South Korea, 55 boxes of remains draped in the United Nations flag were taken to a US military plane, which will then take them to a military laboratory in Hawaii for further analysis and identification.

This week, the US received the remains of dozens of presumed USA war dead that were handed over by North Korea.

The United Nations Command repatriated 55 cases of soldier remains returned by North Korea last Thursday.

The delegation met with Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of North Korea.

Pence arrived with his wife in Honolulu Wednesday along with several family members of Korean War veterans.

Trump said in a Twitter post following the summit with Kim in Singapore last month: "Everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office".

An unidentified USA defense official, however, said there was only one set of military identification tags, known as dog tags, with the remains.

The repatriation is a breakthrough in a long-stalled USA effort to obtain war remains from North Korea.

"We've been watching the news, and we've been hopeful that my uncle is among the remains", he said, adding that it could bring his family some closure.

"The remains are consistent with remains we have recovered in North Korea.in the past", Byrd told reporters at the Osan US Air Base in South Korea. The official, who discussed previously undisclosed aspects of the remains issue on condition of anonymity, also said North Korea provided a single military dog tag along with the remains. Other U.S. service members were captured and placed in prisoner-of-war camps, where many succumbed to starvation, exposure and torture.

North Korea is also reportedly still secretly operating the Kangson uranium-enrichment facility.

The officials say the evidence shows that North Korea is working on at least one liquid-fueled long-range ICBM at the plant that made the country's first missile capable of reaching the US.

The State Department said the administration still believes Mr. Kim was honest in his commitment to move toward abandoning his country's nuclear weapons when he met in early June with Mr. Trump in Singapore.

North Korea has provided very little information to help identify the remains, a defense official told VOA.

President Donald Trump shakes hands with North Korea leader Kim Jong Un during their first meeting at the Capella resort on Sentosa Island, in Singapore, June 12, 2018.

55 caskets draped in the United Nations flag were loaded onto two U.S. Air Force C-17 aircraft, which took off Wednesday evening, Korea time, . heading to Hawaii for DNA identification.

The Korean War ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty.

The North Koreans "never agreed to give up their nuclear program", said Ken Gause, a North Korea expert at the Center for Naval Analysis.

"It's my duty to provide assurance for all countries in the world, Asia, including North Korea, that the safety in Indonesia is stable". "North Korea has great potential for the future!"
