Zimbabwe election: Both sides certain of winning

The commission's results showed President Emmerson Mnangagwa - who took over leading Zanu PF after Mugabe was ousted - won the big majority against 41 seats for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

The ruling ZANU-PF party won a majority of seats in Parliament, the Election Commission said.

MDC leader Nelson Chamisa, 40, has said the results were fraudulent.

Mnangagwa was allegedly involved in violence and intimidation during the 2008 elections when then opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai pulled out of the run-off after attacks claimed the lives of at least 200 of his supporters.

The BBC reports that the announcement on the presidential poll was not made because representatives of some of the 23 candidates had failed to turn up to verify the results.

Chamisa said the early release of the parliamentary results was a deliberate ploy to prepare Zimbabweans for a victory by Mnangagwa, a former national security chief nicknamed "The Crocodile" and commonly referred to by the initials ED.

The assessments are critical for Zimbabwe, because foreign governments, including the US, have made any financial aid conditional on holding democratic elections.

Observers had raised concerns about the independence of the electoral commission ahead of the vote, pointing to close ties to the ruling party and the military.

The country's landmark election - the first since veteran autocrat Robert Mugabe was ousted a year ago - turned bloody Wednesday when troops opened fire on demonstrations against alleged electoral fraud, leaving three people dead. "We won the popular vote (and) will defend it", Chamisa wrote on Twitter.

A Harare-based political analyst with Zimbabwe Democracy Institute, Pedzisai Ruhanya, said the results released so far could be a reflection of the will of the people but were not flawless. Three people were killed.

The opposition alleges the elections have irregularities, saying voting results were not posted outside one-fifth of polling stations as required by law.

A presidential poll will be held on Saturday, September 8, if a candidate does not secure more than 50 percent of the vote, but it will probably take a couple of days before the results of the presidential election have come in.

But just hours later, President Mnangagwa said he was "positive" of the election outcome in Zanu PF's favour.

As results have yet to be officially announced by the ZEC sources counting the ballots have said it is "close".

"Opposition parties have never enjoyed the freedom of meeting their supporters the way they have been doing‚ so they have perhaps misinterpreted our understanding to being weak‚" he said. We must all demonstrate patience and maturity, and act in a way that puts our people and their safety first.

This has been seen as a pivotal election for Zimbabwe, with citizens expressing hope for change after years of economic malaise and political oppression under Mugabe.

It alleges that the governing Zanu-PF party has rigged Monday's elections. "Let me also warn such individuals and groups that no one is above the law", Home Affairs Minister Obert Mpofu said.
