When the situation stabilizes, Rudskoy said, the Russian-manned posts would be handed over to Syrian government forces.

The Israeli Defense Forces said it launched an airstrike on Wednesday night, killing seven terrorists from the Islamic State who had infiltrated Israeli territory in the Golan Heights along the Syrian border.

Sergei Rudskoi, a senior Russian defense ministry official, said that Russian military police had on Thursday begun patrolling in the Golan Heights and planned to set up eight observation posts in the area.

The UN peacekeeping forces first deployed along the frontier in 1974 to separate Syrian and Israeli forces after Israel occupied the Golan Heights in the 1967 war.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told his troops on Wednesday they were close to victory after inflicting a succession of defeats on rebels.

Israel said the group was around 200m (656ft) from an Israeli fence in the zone, delineated by Israel and Syria in 1974.

Israeli soldiers patrol the cease-fire line between Israel and Syria, as seen from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

In comments on Thursday, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman declared that from the Israeli perspective, the Syrian War is over, and returning to a pre-war situation, with the Assad government remaining in power. The UN mission was also unable to access a refugee camp in Israel via Syria.

Israel has sought to avoid direct involvement in the Syrian conflict but acknowledges carrying out dozens of airstrikes there to stop what it says are deliveries of advanced weaponry to Hezbollah. An initial assessment by Israel's military identified the gunmen as Islamic State militants, in what would mark a rare attempt by the Islamist militants to infiltrate Israel.

The Israeli military confirmed a strike against what it called "armed terror operatives" but it did not give any details on casualties.

"The IDF remains, on high readiness, and levels of alert for any threats - be it in the air or on the ground - and we of course remain committed to defend Israeli citizens and Israeli sovereignty", Conricus told journalists.

But the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) left the area several years ago as ISIS and rebel groups seized territory there.
