Google 'working on search engine to comply with China censorship'

Report: Google's Plan to Launch Censored Search Engine in China Revealed

According to reports, Google is planning to launch a censored version of its search engine for China that will block websites and search terms about human rights, democracy, religion, and peaceful protest.

According to South China Morning Post (SCMP), China is home to 772 million Internet users - the biggest online community in the world. Pichai has publicly stated he was eager for Google to start operating in China. The (successful) refusal of Google staff to work for the U.S. military has proved that workers have a say in the company's future.

Google had a similar version of its search engine available in China between 2006 and 2010, but eventually made a decision to retreat from the country following harsh criticism from the United States for its compliance with the government's censorship.

But that wasn't always the case.

It is unknown whether the firm will eventually launch a desktop version of its search platform in China as well. The same filtering will work with all features of Google's search engine, including image searching, spell checking, and search recommendations. That gave Chinese internet users an idea of what they were not allowed to see.

As per the report, Google's search app would automatically "identify and filter" all the content blocked by China's firewall. Lastly, Google bowning down to the Chinese government is a huge win for the latter as it sets a precedent for smaller companies not to challenge censorship in China.

Google had previously complied with censorship controls starting in 2006 as it sought a toehold in the booming Chinese economy.

Google was battling Baidu (BIDU) for market share.

Cotton was also one of three sponsors of an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that he argued would limit the national security threat posed by Huawei and ZTE, a Chinese telecommunications equipment manufacturer. Due to the censorship related issue, the tech giant Google was reluctant to launch its services in China.

Beijing denied that it had been involved in the attacks, but the incident sparked a political fight with Washington. What is surprising, however, is that Google, back in 2010, withdrew its services from China after it discovered a cyberattack from within the country that targeted it and dozens of other companies.

Businesses that depended on Google applications such as Google Docs and Gmail also suffered. By 2014, Google's piece of the pie had shriveled to just over 4%. Facebook (FB), which competes with Google for advertising revenue, is also locked out of China. According to MarketWatch, Baidu's stock dropped slightly after The Intercept's report broke.

Human rights group Amnesty International said it was calling on Google to change course.

The apps are dubbed as Maotai and Longfei and are still to receive the final approval from the Chinese government. The Intercept reported that such terms would be censored in the planned app. "They are intrusive", he added.

Sen. Marco Rubio and even some Google employees are among those criticizing the company.
