Reports in Italy had suggested that La Samp and the Gunners had already agreed a deal for the Uruguay global, but the transfer was put on hold until after his participation in Russian Federation.

But Torreira is in no rush to finalise the switch while Uruguay remain in the hunt for World Cup glory, according to his father.

Uruguay midfielder Lucas Torreira and France Under-20 worldwide Matteo Guendouzi are set to have medicals at Arsenal on Monday.

Reports from L'Equipe have claimed that Emery personally convinced the player, who plays in a holding role in midfield, to choose London over Paris for the next step in his career.

Torreira, 22, has confirmed that he is flying to London for a medical with the Gunners in an opportunity he says he "can't waste".

"It is as good as a fact that Lucas will join Arsenal", Ricardo Torreira told Fox Sports Argentina. He, alongside the rest of his Uruguayan teammates, finds himself staring at the chance of playing in the World Cup semi final should his nation get the better of France on Saturday afternoon, but a move to England is weighing on his mind.

"There are many clubs who contacted us but we have given our word to Arsenal and are very satisfied with what they offered".

The BBC's David Ornstein tweeted shortly after the full-time whistle that Torreira has agreed on a deal with Arsenal and that his signing and a medical is "imminent".

Arsenal have so far signed Stephan Lichtsteiner, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Bernd Leno.

Those players not on World Cup duty have already returned for the start of pre-season training, with a first warm-up fixture set against Boreham Wood at Meadow Park on Saturday.
