Trump admits son met Russian to get dirt on Clinton

President Donald Trump appears to have changed his story about a 2016 meeting at Trump Tower that is pivotal to the special counsel's investigation, tweeting that his son met with a Kremlin-connected lawyer to collect information about his political opponent.

President Trump's other claim in his Sunday tweet - that he did not know about the Trump Tower meeting with the Russians - may also be exposed as a lie.

He concludes the tweet by saying, "I did not know about it!" While originally Trump, a Republican, said the meeting was about adoptions, on Sunday he said on Twitter that it was about getting information on his election opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Donald Trump Jr. stands onstage with his father then-presidential nominee Donald Trump after a debate against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, in September 2016.

His newest tweet is the closest he has come to admitting the meeting's goal was to seek dirt on Clinton from the Russians.

"The question is what law, statute or rule or regulation has been violated, and nobody has pointed to one", said Jay Sekulow, one of Trump's attorneys, on ABC's "This Week".

Sekulow said on Sunday his erroneous denial about Trump's involvement was a mistake based on "bad information".

Previously, the Trumps pushed another explanation for the meeting, after having failed to disclosed it and denied anything of the sort had ever happened in the first place.

Napolitano said that federal law prohibits "receipt" of information or anything of value by Americans involved in a campaign from foreign individuals or entities.

Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen has claimed Trump knew about the meeting ahead of time.

He said that Trump's legal team is inclined "at this point" to advise Trump not to agree to be interviewed by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 US election and possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.

The president's lawyers argue that the meeting, in and of itself, violated no laws.

And they said Trump Jr., Kushner and White House staffers had made a "full disclosure" about that session to Mueller and Congress.

Abrams hinted that Trump's evolving story may be grounds for impeachment, citing a precedent set by Ken Starr during the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton in the 1990's. But on Sunday, he essentially admitted, finally, that his son had indeed taken a meeting with a Kremlin-linked official in the hopes of colluding with the Russian government. Trump's lawyers acknowledged in a letter to Mueller's team in January 2018 that Trump dictated the response, according to the Times.

"The question is, how would it be illegal?" he asked. Well, well, would you look at that: the patented "how dare this Fox moron accuse me of smoking something other than premium cigars" tweet.

Sekulow said that the president had the authority under Article II of the U.S. Constitution to stop any investigation conducted by the Department of Justice.
