A raid on a New Mexico desert compound turned up 11 children wearing rags and living in filth, and also broke open a weird tale of guns, exorcism, and a search for a missing young boy who suffers from seizures and is nowhere to be found.

At a news conference in Taos, Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe said deputies recovered the remains of a small child at the compound near the community of Amalia on Monday morning.

Hujrah Wahhaj, 38; and Subhannah Wahhaj, 35, were charged with child abuse related to the alleged neglect and abuse of children, who were found living in "filthy" conditions and with hardly any food, the Taos County Sheriff's Office said.

Siraj Wahhaj, the boy's father, was arrested after the children, ranging in age from 1 to 15, were discovered by authorities.

Investigators said that's where they found Siraj Wahhaj living in a filthy trailer in what police described as some sort of makeshift compound in some of the worst conditions they've ever seen.

Officials in Clayton County, Georgia, said the boy and his father were last seen in Alabama, on December 13, when they were involved in a traffic accident while traveling with five other children and two adults, KOAT-TV reported. It is unclear whether human remains discovered during that search are those of Abdul-Ghani Wahhaj, whose fourth birthday was Monday.

The eleven children found are in New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department custody.

Morten is facing an additional charge of harboring a fugitive, and Siraj Wahhaj is also being held on a child abduction warrant out of Georgia.

The grandfather of the missing boy, Imam Siraj Wahhaj of Brooklyn, New York, issued a plea on Facebook for helping finding his grandson.

But a tip forwarded to Georgia detective last week set off a series of events that led to a raid at the New Mexico compound. "But Hogrefe said authorities have reason to believe the boy was at the compound several weeks ago".

Georgia officials want him extradited to face a charge of abducting his son and the warrant says that Wahhaj told the boy's mother he wanted to perform an exorcism on his son. Authorities in New Mexico on Tuesday said they have found the remains of a young boy.

Georgia authorities said Wahhaj was traveling through Chilton County on December 13 with seven children and another adult when their auto overturned.

Deputies in Taos County, New Mexico rescued 11 kids living in bad conditions at this makeshift "compound".

The state agency said it planned to file a petition with the court to maintain custody of the children, according to Monique Jacobson, cabinet secretary for the department.

What authorities found Friday was what Hogrefe called "the saddest living conditions and poverty" he has seen in 30 years on the job.

Wahhaj was located upon entry and taken into custody, as was another adult male who was on the compound, Lucas Morten, Hogrefe said. The station said the vehicle was registered to Morten and that according to policed five additional children and two adults were traveling with Wahhaj and his son.

The search at the compound came amid a two-month investigation in collaboration with Clayton County authorities and the FBI, according to Hogrefe. He said the younger Wahhaj and two of the women arrested - Hujrah and Subhannah Wahhaj - are his children.

Upon a search of the New Mexico property, Hogrefe said investigators found Wahhaj armed with an "AR-15 rifle, five loaded 30-round magazines, and four loaded pistols, including one in his pocket".

Both the adults and the children looked like "refugees not only with no food or fresh water, but with no shoes, personal hygiene and basically dirty rags for clothing".
