2 equine cases of West Nile Virus confirmed in Montana

Officials say two pools of mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus

Officials say two pools of mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus

North Dakota is reporting a sharp increase in the number of West Nile Virus cases.

This follows detection of the virus in mosquito surveillance pools from Cascade, Hill, and Lewis & Clark counties.

Symptoms can include: fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, swollen lymph glands and a rash on the chest, stomach or back. Drain such areas around your home (gutters, pools, tires, buckets, water bowls, etc.).

"I know it might be uncomfortable, considering the heat", said Natalie Kwit, State Public Health Veterinarian with the Vermont Department of Health, "but you should wear long sleeves and long trousers when outside".

∫ Remove standing water and water-holding containers from around your home and property. However, the virus can be spread across people via mosquito bites but does not spread from person to person.

Mosquitoes are most active at dusk and during the early-morning hours. In Ohio, West Nile virus was first identified in birds and mosquitoes in 2001. According to the CDC, most people infected with EEE do not show illness. County workers then capture and test mosquitoes from those areas to see whether they're infected.

West Nile Virus affects humans, equines, and birds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends insect repellents that contain DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone. The virus is life-threatening for the elderly.

Mosquitoes collected in the town tested positive for West Nile virus recently, and the Vermont Department of Health wants folks to be informed about the potential risks and effects.

Mosquitoes with West Nile virus have been found this year in: Bethany, Bridgeport, Darien, Easton, Franklin, Greenwich, Hartford, Madison, New Canaan, New Haven, Stamford, Stratford, Waterbury, Waterford, West Haven and Weston.

Six human cases of West Nile have been reported so far this year in Louisiana.

"There is no direct treatment for the virus in horses, but vaccination is highly effective in preventing disease".
