Whitmer will be challenged by Republican Bill Schuette and Libertarian Bill Gelineau. Schuette - an ally of President Donald Trump - easily defeated Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, conservative state Sen. In the contests for both the governor's office and the Senate, some of the state's most Trump-like conservatives will square off against two traditional Democrats - and two women - in Whitmer and the incumbent senator, Debbie Stabenow.

"We need a governor who knows how to get things done". "I am proud of our state".

The state's Democratic nomination went to State Sen.

Green Party candidate Jennifer Kurland was unopposed in the primary. He credited Republican leaders for helping the state "get off the mat" after a decade-long downturn and said Whitmer would "take us back to a time of shuttered industries, dashed dreams and higher taxes".

Whitmer, the first-ever female leader of a MI state Senate caucus, beat back challenges from former Detroit health director Dr. Abdul El-Sayed and chemical-testing entrepreneur Shri Thanedar.

She said even Republican-leaning women in Oakland County north of Detroit are volunteering for her campaign. "The people who are supportive of the president are very supportive, they're very enthusiastic", said Anderson, adding that the GOP also will have to appeal to independent swing voters.

In her victory speech, Whitmer thanked her supporters and her family and everyone who voted for her, along with her Democratic opponents in the race.

She also claims her message is resonating with female voters in the state.

Vice President Pence and other Republican leaders gathered at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. Thank you for believing in me, for supporting me, for carrying me. In suburban Detroit's 11th District, GOP businesswoman Lena Epstein and Democrat Haley Stevens were leading the fields to follow a retiring Republican congressman.

Bernie Sanders and upstart NY congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to boost Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, who lost to Whitmer.

Schuette also thanked his competitors in the Republican party for their commitment to the state and their service to MI. I appreciate your spirit", she said."And to those who supported Shri, Abdul, or Bill in this race: Join us!
