Gerard Depardieu the famous french actor known for his roles such as Cyrano de Bergerac has been accused of rape by an un-named actress

The complaint against Depardieu, 69, was filed with the Paris prosecutor's office on Monday.

Depardieu's lawyer, Hervé Temime, said the actor "absolutely" refuted any accusation of assault or rape.

Depardieu, 69, is France's biggest global star and has made more than 180 films. He said he expected the complaint to "not prosper on the judicial level".

The unnamed woman, who alleges Depardieu assaulted her twice in one of his Paris homes, made a statement to police in Lambesc, southern France, and it has since been passed to prosecutors in the French capital.

The legal complaint comes in the wake of a string of accusations of rape and harassment in the film industry in France and overseas, sparked by the Harvey Weinstein scandal. He added: "I regret the public nature of this procedure which is causing serious damage to Gérard Depardieu". The French actor, best known for films like Cyrano de Bergerac and Green Card, denies the allegations "absolutely".

The French actor has been accused of rape and sexual assault by a young woman whose name has yet to be revealed. "But we are also clear-eyed enough not to confuse an awkward attempt to pick someone up with a sexual attack", the letter continued, CBS News reports.

He has starred alongside actresses including Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Adjani, Sophia Loren, Fanny Ardant and Kate Winslet.

French actor Gerard Depardieu was accused of sexual harassment and rape by an actress in her 20s.

Salvation came through acting, which Depardieu began in 1965 - purportedly after working as a beach boy at the Cannes festival - by attending the Theatre National Populaire in Paris.

Putin gave Depardieu a Russian passport in 2013 after he renounced his French citizenship to protest against taxes.
