Former Sen. Jon Kyl to finish out John McCain's term

In a statement announcing Kyle's appointment, Ducey said his fellow Republican "understands how the Senate functions and will make an immediate and positive impact benefiting all Arizonans".

Jon Kyl to fill the Senate vacancy left by John McCain's August 25 death, the Arizona Republic reported, an appointment that will give Republicans a critical vote they had been missing since McCain returned to Arizona in December for treatment.

Former senator Jon Kyl will inherit John McCain's seat in the upper chamber.

The appointment was tweeted by McCain's widow, Cindy. John McCain at a memorial service inside the Arizona State Capitol Rotunda on August 29.

Ducey confirmed the pick in a tweet Tuesday. "John and I served the people of Arizona for almost two decades, and in that spirit, along with Senator [Jeff] Flake, I will do my best to ensure Arizonans are well represented in the Senate".

Kyl will fill the Arizona Senate seat until the next general election in 2020.

Arizona's governor would be required by state law to appoint another Republican before the 2020 election. Some Arizonans also said they would have liked to see McCain's wife Cindy named to fill his seat.

Kyl's appointment to the Senate will restore the 51-49 majority held by Republicans. John McCain and Kyl served in the Senate at the same time.

Kyl, incidentally, is leading the process through the Senate for President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh. He would provide more of a cushion to a Republican victory in the deeply divided Senate given that McCain had been too sick all year to cast votes in Washington.

Kyl, a former GOP whip, also worked in support of Judge Neil Gorsuch's Supreme Court nomination for the client Judicial Crisis Network, which paid Covington $215,000 a year ago, according to lobbying disclosures.

McCain served more than 30 years in the U.S. Senate prior to his death. Jon Kyl to the Senate following GOP Sen. "I look forward to working with him".

Kyl says he did not want to commit for a longer period because when he left his Senate seat previously he had no intention of returning.

"No", Kyl said flatly when asked whether he might one day serve again.

Up for reelection in November, Ducey faced the dilemma ensnaring other Republicans in 2018: avoid angering Trump, who has a viselike grip on the party, while placating the GOP establishment epitomized by McCain, who dominated state politics for more than three decades.

The former Arizona senator also has a close relationship with Ducey, who has referred to him as a mentor that he has leaned on through the early days of his administration.
