Nadal, Del Potro, Serena into last-eight

Nadal advances to face Thiem in U.S. Open quarterfinals

Everything was on Thiem's racquet in the opening set, delivering only the fourth bagel in Nadal's Grand Slam career (Andy Roddick at the US Open 2004, Roger Federer at Wimbledon 2006 and Tomas Berdych at the Australian Open 2015) after winning 24 out of 31 points!

The fourth set was a wild 81-minute ride that began with Thiem facing break points, saw the Austrian threaten a double break before being pegged back and then a tired Nadal miss a chance to win the match.

Nadal was clearly rattled and lost the first three points of the tiebreak, that Thiem won 7-4 to force a fourth set.

After nearly three and a half hours, the three-time victor at Flushing Meadows belatedly came through 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4 ahead of an encounter with French Open finalist Thiem.

"It has been a great battle".

"Besides being small, you have to understand the history of Georgia, where in the 1990s, it was very tough", Pachulia said.

Elsewhere, Juan Martin del Potro, the 2009 champion, beat Croatia's Borna Coric 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 to make the last-eight for a third successive year.

And I'm very happy as it is going now with the improvement.

But as he showed against Thiem, no one is better with his back against the wall than Nadal.

"I definitely have more experience than him and that might have helped me in certain moments". Serving for the set at 5-4, the younger player sprayed a backhand error to give his serve away, sending the momentum to the other side of the net which Nadal used with both hands.

"I just wish him all the very very best".

"I feel like I've come back here a year - from last year, it's been a year now, and I feel like such a different player". It has included brief two-set bouts and rugged three-setters, with seven wins for the so-called "King of Clay", and an admirable, tantalizing three victories for his presumed successor.

Nadal leads their head-to-head 7-3 with all of their matches coming on clay courts.

In the fourth set, Thiem once again took control early, breaking Nadal to take a 2-1 lead.

The Nadal who was gassed and wearing a cooling vest during breaks in the first set was no more. He has now won seven US Open quarter-finals in a row when he's made it that far; his only loss in that round came back in 2006.

Straightforward passage to the last eight still appeared on the cards after the unseeded Basilashvili faded rapidly after a bright start, yet a sloppy third set from Nadal forced him to fight into a fourth once more. But I did today, so I just keep up my habits.

John Isner, the top-seeded American man at No. 11, served 20 aces in outlasting Milos Raonic of Canada 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. "To win in straight sets in every round is good for the body and physical condition", said Del Potro popularly referred to as DelPo. He served big when he needed to, played unbelievably big.
