A highway overpass has collapsed in the crowded Indian city of Kolkata, with a concrete segment slamming to the ground and killing at least one person, according to officials.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Meeraj Khalid told ANI that rescue operations were under way. "Rest of the investigation will be done later", said Banerjee, who is in Darjeeling. West Bengal governor Keshari Nath Tripathi blamed the state government for poor maintenance, and a political blame game started over what led to the accident.

"We are constantly monitoring the situation", she said. It runs over the Majerhat Railway Station and connects the city centre with the heavily populated Behala, vast areas of the southwest suburbs and neighbouring South 24 Parganas district.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident "unfortunate". "I pray that those who are injured recover at the earliest", he wrote on Twitter.

"Train services in Circular Railway and Sealdah-Budge Budge line have been suspended as precautionary measure following the collapse of a portion of the bridge", Eastern Railway spokesman RN Mahapatra said.

The area near the site had been dug up for a metro railway project and construction materials are strewn all over the place.

One man died from head injuries in the collapse and another 21 people were taken to hospital, some in critical condition.

Over two years after an under-construction flyover collapsed in Kolkata, the tragedy has once again struck West Bengal's capital city.
