Nadal suffered problems with his right knee during his third-round win over Russian Karen Khachanov but insisted it was not a major issue and subsequently won gruelling matches against Nikoloz Basilashvili and Dominic Thiem.

Although Nadal has the edge when it comes to head-to-head meetings, all five of Del Potro's victories have come on hard courts where his flat forehands are at their most effective and he will look to utilise that weapon as much as possible.

Rafael Nadal felt the pain sear into his right knee early in his US Open semifinal, on what he called "a bad movement".

"Of course, it's not the best way to win a match", said del Potro, who hugged Nadal when it was over. "It was one tennis player playing, the other standing at the side of the court".

Del Potro now awaits the result of Novac Djokovic's match against Kei Nishikori to find out his opponent in the final, following the 7-6 (3), 6-2 injury win.

Where can I stream Rafael Nadal vs Juan Martin del Potro? . After losing the first three matches of his comeback this year, he has gone on to reach the quarter-finals at Roland Garros, lose to Nadal in the semi-finals in Rome and in the Queen's final to Cilic, before beating Kevin Anderson in the Wimbledon final. It was so hard for me to keep playing, I was in too much pain.

Following these, Nishikori and Djokovic meet in the second men's semi-final tonight, which will start not before 2300 United Kingdom time, although in all likelihood, quite a bit later.

"We have never met in a Grand Slam final. I think the key of the match was the first set".

Nadal recovered in typically gutsy fashion, but took a medical timeout at the end of the game for more treatment and it soon became clear he was in major trouble.

The Serb held comfortably and crafted five break points in the second game of the match, converting the fifth.

Nadal has been forced out of tournaments due to left and right knee problems over the last decade, withdrawing before 2009 Wimbledon and the 2012 Olympics and during the 2010 Australian Open.

"One of the keys. will be how well can I return, how many returns I can get back in play, but also try to have some depth in that return, and how accurately I can serve myself".

Djokovic and del Potro will face each other in the finals on Sunday.

Nadal leads the series 11-5, though del Potro routed him in straight sets in the 2009 semifinals. He even barely took any time between points while serving - and he's known as one of the slowest guys on tour. I am having a lot of success.

Nadal, who had never before retired from a U.S. Open match, showed signs of distress nearly from the start as he limped noticeably after a grueling 69-minute opening set. In the final when I beat Rafa and then Roger I was a kid then, but now I am much older'.
