Van der Zwaan was sentenced to 30 days in prison.

Papadopoulos also had contact with senior-level advisors and members of the Trump campaign on numerous occasions and was told by a Russian-connected London professor, Joseph Mifsud, that the Russians had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton in the form of "thousands of emails".

The FBI launched Crossfire Hurricane, its counterintelligence investigation into the Trump campaign in July 2016 after learning that Papadopoulos had repeated Mifsud's claim to Australian diplomat Alexander Downer in London over drinks.

"In January 2017, I made a bad mistake for which I paid dearly, I am ashamed", Papadopoulos told the court in Washington.

The DNC, which is suing Russian Federation, the Trump campaign, and WikiLeaks for interfering in the 2016 election, said that it believes that all the defendants in the case had been served with the complaint, "with the exception of Mifsud (who is missing and may be deceased)".

Papadopoulos pleaded guilty in October to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about meetings with individuals closely associated with the Russian government during the campaign.

Papadopoulos had pleaded guilty to the crime last October.

Also on August 21, a jury in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, found former Trump election campaign chairman Paul Manafort guilty on eight of 18 charges of filing false tax returns, failing to disclose his offshore bank accounts and bank fraud. Three others have either pleaded guilty or been convicted. The judge declared a mistrial on the remaining 10 counts, and prosecutors have yet to decide whether to retry him on the deadlocked charges. Manafort and Gates have yet to be sentenced.

However, Friday's sentence was much lesser than the six months the prosecution had requested for Papadopoulos, The Guardian reported.

US District Judge Randolph Moss on Friday sentenced Papadopoulos to 14 days, noting that he "lied in an investigation that was important to national security".

Before he was sentenced, Papadopoulos spoke to Judge Randy Moss for about three minutes, reading a speech in which he admitted he was wrong, ashamed and regretful. "I think about it still".

In response to Papadopoulos' claims, Sessions released a statement through his lawyer to CNN stating he "stands by his testimony". He and his wife later participated in more media interviews.

Breen said Friday that Papadopoulos lied because he was still giddy from his rapid ascent in Trump's campaign, his hopes of securing a job in the new administration and a sense of loyalty to the president.

Today in court, his lawyers argued President Trump's attacks on the Mueller's investigation have done much more damage to the probe than "George Papadopoulos ever could".

The president weighed in shortly after the sentence was handed down, scoffing in a tweet at the length and making an apparent reference to the cost of Mueller's investigation.

Russian Federation has continually denied allegations of interfering in the 2016 election. "There's no doubt about it".

Trump and his allies have repeatedly downplayed Papadopoulos' role on the campaign, with one of them describing him as a mere "coffee boy".

Papadopoulos has said that it was his loyalty to Trump, his career ambitions and his efforts to distance the campaign from any Russian associations that led him to lie to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. "I might have, but I have no recollection of doing so".
