Serena Williams fined $17,000 for violations during the US Open final

Williams was given the code violation for coaching early in the second set of the match, which Osaka won 6-2, 6-4.

Williams lost to Naomi Osaka in Saturday's final.

The tournament referee's office Sunday docked Williams $10,000 for "verbal abuse" of chair umpire Carlos Ramos.

MARGARET COURT, the 24-time Grand Slam victor Serena Williams is aiming to emulate.

When the violation was announced Williams approached Ramos to say she never takes coaching and would rather lose than "cheat to win".

"I know that everyone was cheering for her", Osaka told the crowd, "and I'm sorry it had to end like this".

Former world number one star Andy Roddick defended Ms Williams and said he had "regrettably said worse and I've never gotten a game penalty".

King tweeted, "when a woman is emotional, she's "hysterical" and she's penalised for it".

Williams put an arm around Osaka's shoulder and told the crowd: "I know you guys were here rooting, and I was rooting, too, but let's make this the best moment we can".

On Saturday, Williams repeatedly told Ramos she wanted an apology. She has had a series of run-ins with officials at the Open, the Grand Slam event that she has won six times but that she has also been eliminated from four times in matches with contentious officiating. "But I'm going to continue to fight for women". Williams said she did not see him offer coaching help from the players' box, in the stands.

This was not the way it was supposed to go for Williams, 36, perhaps the greatest player her sport has seen, on a night that was supposed to be a celebration of her career and her comeback to the top of tennis a year after giving birth.

Eventually she returned to the baseline, serving out a game to love before Osaka held serve to win her first Grand Slam win.

She later accused him of sexism, saying: "He's never taken a game from a man because they said "thief".

In her post-match news conference Williams said she was she "was not being coached" and that she "did not understand" why Mouratoglou would say he was doing so.

"In what was a blatantly racist and sexist move, tennis umpire Carlos Ramos unfairly penalized Serena Williams in an abhorrent display of male dominance and discrimination".

"I've said far worse", McEnroe, a seven-time Grand Slam singles victor, said on ESPN. "I thought I did a really good job throughout all the matches, kind of putting that aside and just going out there and playing tennis".

During a changeover, Williams resumed her argument with the umpire, this time saying he was attacking her character and was a "thief". I'm not sure if they were happy tears or they were just sad tears, because of the moment.

Osaka is just 20, 16 years younger than Williams - and grew up idolizing the American, even asking her to pose for a selfie together at a tournament just a handful of years ago.

In the rule book, verbal abuse is defined as "a statement about an official, opponent, sponsor, spectator, or other person that implies dishonesty or is derogatory, insulting or otherwise abusive". "He's never taken a game from a man because they said 'thief'". Mouratoglou also offered a few valid points.

One thing that is certain is that Osaka's stock around the world, but particularly in Japan, will skyrocket.

With jeers bouncing off the arena's closed roof, both players - the champion, Osaka, and the runner-up, Williams - wiped away tears during a trophy ceremony that was awkward for everyone involved.
